1) Programming Foundations (usually Python)
Python is the language of AI — and it’s beginner-friendly. You need to write clean, working code,
use basic logic and fix errors. This is your foundation; everything else sits on top of it.
2) Working with APIs
APIs are how software talks to software. FDEs use them to connect AI to a company’s existing apps
and data. Learning to call an API and read its documentation is a genuine must-have.
3) Data & Databases
AI runs on data. You’ll need basic SQL to pull information from databases, plus the ability to clean
and organize messy data so the AI can actually use it.
4) Cloud Platforms
Real solutions don’t live on your laptop. Learning the basics of one cloud platform — AWS, Microsoft
Azure or Google Cloud — lets you run AI where businesses actually use it.
5) Containers & Deployment (Docker + basic DevOps)
Docker packages your app so it runs the same everywhere. Add basic DevOps — like moving code
smoothly from testing to live (CI/CD) — and you can deploy solutions reliably.
6) AI & LLM Essentials
Understand, at a practical level, how today’s AI works: writing good prompts, building simple AI
agents and connecting AI to a company’s own documents (often called RAG). Knowing the limits —
cost, speed and mistakes — matters just as much.
7) Version Control (Git & GitHub)
Git is how engineers save, share and track code without chaos. Every FDE works with Git and
GitHub daily — a small skill with big everyday value.
8) Monitoring & Troubleshooting
Once AI is live, it has to keep working. You’ll read logs, watch dashboards, find the root cause of
problems and roll back safely when needed. This is what separates a demo from a real product.
